Organising In-service Training for Language and Technology in Education

This presentation will outline the background, development and running of Oilte (Organising Inservice Training for Languages and Technology in Education). This is a two-phase pilot project whose purpose is to train teachers in the use of ICT in the language classroom and to disseminate good practice in language education in Ireland.

The training of trainers in Phase I has been conducted in centres around the country with the participation of a number of leading Irish and international specialists in CALL.The presentation will describe the selection process for the project and give details of the profile of the participants in Phase I. It will describe the organisational aspects of the training and give an outline of the course content.

In Phase I of Oilte a core group of 17 teachers from around the Republic of Ireland were selected to represent language teaching at Primary, Secondary and Further Education levels. They were trained as trainers and are currently planning to deliver a training course to language teaching colleagues in their own school or local area. The course they will deliver in Phase II will be one that is adapted to the needs of these colleagues and suited to the learning context in question.

Interim impressions of the project will be presented and as well as plans for the structure of Phase II and the future development of the project beyond its pilot stage.

Oilte is being co-ordinated by Institiúid Teangeolaíochta Éireann (ITÉ) with funding from the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE).
