Pre-conference Workshops

Uses of web-enabled databases in CALL

FEE 80 EUR
Maximum number of participants 25

This one-day workshop aims to provide participants with a) a conceptual understanding of how web-enabled databases can be utilized in the areas of collaborative curriculum development, low stakes test administration and scoring, and interaction research, b) a chance to explore exemplary web-enabled databases used for language learning and teaching, and c) an opportunity to create web-enabled databases.

During the first (and shorter) part of the workshop, the presenters will highlight various implementation options and discuss these in light of software, hardware, practical, and financial requirements. Additionally, exemplary uses of web-enabled databases in language learning settings will be presented.

For the remainder of the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to design and implement two illustrative database projects (e.g., a collaborative lesson plan database or a survey or questionnaire database) and web-enable them. Participants registered for the workshop are encouraged to contact the presenters (volkerh@iastate.edu or joden@iastate.edu) to complete a needs and interest survey three weeks prior to the workshop in order to help the presenters fine-tune the agenda and to address the specific needs of the participants.

The workshop will be conducted in English. All accompanying materials such as handouts and tutorials will be in English as well.
