Travel arrangements -planes getting full

It has come to the attention of the conference organisers that Finnair flights from Jyväskylä to Helsinki on Sunday the 18th of August are getting full. While making travel arrangements please note that there are several train connections from Jyväskylä to Helsinki, Tampere or Turku from which international and connecting flights are available. See below for info on travelling to/from Jyväskylä and to/from Helsinki, Turku and Tampere.

Travel info

Finland is easily accessible from all over the world. Several international airlines have regular flights to Helsinki. A convenient way also is to take a ferry from Stockholm, Sweden, to Helsinki or Turku.

Jyväskylä is easy to reach by plane, train or bus from Helsinki, Turku and Tampere. The flight takes c. 30 minutes, and the train c. 3.5 hours.

Air Travel to Jyväskylä

There are nine flights from Helsinki to Jyväskylä daily (flight time 35 min) and three from Stockholm daily (flight time 1 h 20 min). See Finnair and SAS for details.

Jyväskylä airport is located about 20 km from the town centre. There is a bus connection between Jyväskylä and the airport that runs according to Finnair timetables. The bus journey takes 25 minutes and costs EUR 7.

Taxi from the airport to Jyväskylä takes 25 minutes and costs about EUR 30. The Airport Taxi is EUR 13,50/person and should be booked in advance (+358 14) 106 400.

Arriving/departing via Helsinki...

Instead of flying to or from Jyväskylä you can take an approximately 3,5 hour train or bus journey through the countryside.

The Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is about 30 minute bus drive from the Helsinki city centre. FINNAIR runs a direct bus service from the airport to the city centre (EUR 5).

...by train

The Finnair Airport Bus arrives to and departs from the Helsinki train station. Trains to and from Jyväskylä depart and arrive almost hourly.

...by bus

There is a coach service from the Helsinki Airport to Jyväskylä and back. In Helsinki the buses leave outside the International Flights Terminal.

More buses to Jyväskylä leave from the Helsinki city centre. To get to the Helsinki bus station (Linja-autoasema) from the airport take the FINNAIR airport bus, EUR 5. This airport bus takes you to the city centre train station which is located close to the central bus station. Buses to Jyväskylä leave almost hourly and tickets can be bought on board. In Jyväskylä the buses arrive in and depart from the Long Distance Bus Station.

Arriving/departing via Turku...

Alternative to travelling via Helsinki is via Turku, the oldest city in Finland, located on the south-west coast.

... by train

If you are arriving/departing by plane, take the Airport Bus to/from the city centre. There is a frequent train service between Jyväskylä and Turku which takes about 3.5 hours and costs EUR 70-80 return.

Arriving/departing via Tampere...

One option worth considering is flying to/from Tampere and getting train to/from Jyväskylä.

There is bus service between the Tampere Airport and the city centre from which trains leave almost hourly. The journey takes about 1.5 hours and costs EUR 35-45 return.

Ferry from Stockholm

If you've got the extra time you can include a relaxing cruise in your travel plans. Overnight cruise ships from Stockholm to Helsinki or Turku and back leave daily. Dining and shopping opportunities are excellent on board and there's always a chance to swing to a little Finnish tango.

If you are taking a ferry to Turku, there is a train connection to Jyväskylä.
