Leo van Lier: Project based Language Learning in a Multimedia classroom

FEE 80 EUR
Maximum number of participants 25

This workshop will examine ways in which technology can be integrated into
a communicative, project-based curriculum. Participants should bring
specific ideas for an second language course they want to design in their
own setting, so that during the workshop they can focus on practical and
realistic solutions.

The workshop will first address the principles behind project-based
language learning, looking at team building, structuring, goal setting,
peer interaction and teacher guidance, including appropriate scaffolding,
feedback and assessment. Examples from project-based clasrooms will be
shown and discussed.

The workshop will also examine design issues for multimedia language
classrooms, and options for building in electronic communication as well.
Next, several applications that can support project work will be looked
at, including presentation programs, multimedia design , web design, and
movie making. Examples of student-made projects in various categories will
be examined, and participants are encouraged to share projects they have
conducted in their own settings.

Practical questions that will be discussed include the possiblities for
doing 'fieldwork'-based projects, such as community research in
second-language settings, or Internet-based or e-mail-based research in
foreign-language settings; how to build an aspect of computer skills
development into the curriculum; how to deal with L1 use in the L2
classsroom; the role of error correction in student-managed projects; and
meaningful assessment.
