SOCIAL PROGRAMME

This social programme concerns both the "24th Summer School of Applied Language Studies" (June 5-7, 2006) and the conference "Language in Action" (June 8-10, 2006).

The Summer School and Conference fees include
the following social events:

Summer School Get-together party

Get-together party is a social event for everyone attending the Summer School. It takes place at the Restaurant Ylistö on Monday, June 5 at 18.15-21.30. The restaurant is situated within walking distance from Agora, and there will be a guided walk from Agora to the Get-together party after the last paper session. During the Summer School Get-together party, you can enjoy the company of other Summer School participants as well as some music while having a drink and some light snacks and offered by the Summer School organisation.


Conference Dinner

Conference Dinner will be offered for those attending the Conference. The dinner will be served at the Restaurant Piato at Agora on Thursday, June 8 at 19-22. During the dinner, the Keynote Memorial Address will be presented by Dorothy Robbins and Aida S. Markosyan in remembrance of the life and work of A. A. Leontiev.

Conference Reception (hosted by the City of Jyväskylä)

Conference Reception is a social event for the participants of the Conference. It is hosted by the City of Jyväskylä, and it takes place at the Town Hall on Friday, June 9 at 18.30-20.00.

In addition to these three events, there are several other options for social programme that are not included in the Summer School or Conference fees. Some examples of these are listed below. For further information about social events, please contact the members of staff at the Information desk.

Jyväskylä Summer Jazz Festival

Jyväskylä Summer Jazz Festival takes place from Thursday June 8 to Sunday June 11. During the festival, several jazz concerts and other jazz-related events are organised in different locations around the town, such as at Paviljonki, Dancehall Lutakko, Galleria Harmonia, Taulumäki Church, and Jazz Bar.


KilleriRock

KilleriRock is a rock festival that takes place at the area of Killeri trotting-track during the weekend from June 10 to June 11. Several popular Finnish rock bands, such as Technicolour, PMMP, Miljoonasade, Egotrippi, Kwan, and Indica will be performing at the festival. Also a few local groups will be playing during the weekend.


Open-air dancing

In Finland open-air dancing, especially in summer, is highly popular. In the Jyväskylä region, there are a number of dance pavilions providing good dance music in an excellent atmosphere. Some examples of popular, local venues for dancing are Suomen Viihdekeskus, Kuikan lava, Savion lava, and the numerous dance restaurants in the region.


Concerts

Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra

Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1955 and it is a versatile orchestra of professional musicians. In addition to its regular symphony concerts in Jyväskylä, the Jyväskylä Sinfonia has toured widely throughout Finland as well as around Europe.

Cinemas

Museums and exhibitions

Museum of Central Finland

The permanent exhibitions of the museum provide a fascinating insight into the life in Central Finland from prehistoric times to the present day, as well as the stages of development of the town of Jyväskylä, founded in 1837.

Alvar Aalto Museum

The museums permanent exhibition acquaints visitors with Alvar Aalto’s colourful life and extensive production, with city plans, interiors, furniture, and glass on display. The studio’s temporary exhibitions provide a rich insight into the world of architecture and design.

Modern art from both Finland and abroad. Free admission to commentary exhibitions in the lower gallery. Space for workshop activity in printmaking and other forms of art, museum shop and corner for reading art magazines.
