LANGUAGE IN ACTION –

This general information concerns both the "24th Summer School of Applied Language Studies" (June 5-7, 2006) and the conference "Language in Action" (June 8-10, 2006).
COFFEE BREAKS
Coffee, tea, fruit, and cookies will be available during the scheduled breaks
by courtesy of the Summer School and the Conference. They will be served
in the lobby.
CLOAKROOM
There is a cloakroom on the ground floor of the venue. It is not guarded,
so please leave your valuables in your hotel.
COMPUTER AND INTERNET ACCESS
Participants can use computers and access Internet free of charge in one
of the computer classes of Agora, the class Africa, Ag B 112.1. It is located
on the ground floor of the venue. Paper givers can make changes in their
presentations in this computer class and print it out. Please note that
if you need several copies of your paper, use the photocopying services.
CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
Selected papers from the Conference will be published in a refereed collection
of articles. If you wish to submit your paper for publication, the deadline
is August 31, 2006. For more information, please contact Riikka
Alanen or Sari Pöyhönen.
EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRES
To let us know your opinion about the Summer School and Conference arrangements,
please complete the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the Summer School
and Conference. There are separate questionnaires for the Summer School
and the Conference. You will find the questionnaire in your folder. Please
hand in the questionnaire at the Information Desk.
HANDOUTS AND PHOTOCOPYING
It is recommended that paper givers will bring a reasonable number of copies
of their paper for distribution at the paper sessions. If you need to make
further copies, contact the staff members at the information desk.
LANGUAGE POLICY
The official language of the Summer School and the Conference will be English.
However, some of the Summer School workshops will be conducted in Finnish.
Unfortunately, no interpreting services will be provided for these sessions.
LUNCHES
There are a few possible restaurants at which you can have lunch. Restaurant
Piato is situated on the ground floor of Agora. You can also enjoy your
lunch at Restaurant Wilhelmiina or at the restaurant of Hotel Alba, which
are both located close to the venue. You will find the menus of these restaurants
on the notice board.
MESSAGES FOR PARTICIPANTS
All messages for participants will placed on the notice board on the ground
floor of the venue.
NAME BADGE
The name badge will be given to you upon arrival to the venue according
to the registration made in advance. This badge entitles you to enter all
Summer School and Conference rooms and the programmes arranged for the participants,
as well as to attend coffee breaks. We kindly ask you to wear the badge
at all the events. The colour of the badge will be yellow for those attending
the Conference and green for those attending the Summer School. If you are
attending both the Summer School and the Conference, you will be given a
badge with the both colours, yellow and green. The members of the staff
will be wearing badges with yellow background.
NOTICE BOARDS
Notice boards are located on the ground floor of the venue, beside the Auditorio
3. The possible changes and updates to the programme will be announced on
the notice boards at the start of the day. If you are attending the Summer
School workshops, please add your name to the registration lists that are
also placed on the notice board. On these notice boards you will also find
information about restaurant menus, social events, and transportation.
OFFICE AND INFORMATION DESK
The Summer School and Conference Office is located on the ground floor of
the venue, close to Auditorio 3. Its opening hours are Mon 10-18, Tue 8-16.15,
Wed 8-13.15, Thu 10-18, Fri 8-16.15, and Sat 8-15. You will recognise the
members of the staff by their name badges with yellow background.
RESTROOMS
There are restrooms in every floor of the venue. You will recognise the
restrooms by female and male symbols.
SMOKING POLICY
In Finland smoking is always prohibited in public spaces and in public transportation;
please take notice of the signs TUPAKOINTI KIELLETTY (No smoking). In Agora
you are only allowed to smoke in the appropriate place outside the building.
SOCIAL PROGRAMME
The Summer School and Conference fees include a few social events: Summer
School Get-together party, Conference dinner, and the Conference reception
hosted by the town of Jyväskylä. In addition to these, there are
several other options for social programme, such as Jyväskylä
Summer Jazz Festival, KilleriRock rock festival, open-air dancing, theatres
etc. Please note that these activities are not included in the Summer School
or Conference fees. For further information about the social events, see
our website and the notice board.
SPEAKER ROOM
Speakers can prepare and get ready for their presentations in the room number
Ag C 232,1, which is located on the second floor of the venue.
STAFF ASSISTANCE
There will be several assistants who are responsible for taking care of
the practical matters during the Summer School and the Conference. For easy
identification they will be wearing name badges with yellow background and
yellow scarves, as other staff members.
TRANSPORTATION
In Jyväskylä, you can use local buses to get from the centre of
the city to the Summer School and the Conference venue. Buses leave from
Vapaudenkatu, which is in the centre next to the pedestrian precinct. The
buses that go to the venue are the numbers 5 and 5K, and they leave from
the stop number 6 in Vapaudenkatu. The fee for a single journey is EUR 2,60.
You can also use taxi to get from one place to another. To get a taxi, please
call +358 14 106 900 or +358 100 6900.
VENUE
The Summer School and Conference events will take place in the Agora Human
Technology Centre at the University of Jyväskylä. The street address
of the venue is Mattilanniemi 2 (Building Agora), 40100 Jyväskylä.
In the entrance hall of Agora you will find the Summer School and Conference
Office as well as the information desk.
